About Jim

Jim spent his career owning small businesses that protect the environment. He grew up loving the woods, which is how he decided to become a forester and wetland scientist. He graduated from the University of Maine in 1981 with a degree in Forest Management. He started out as a forester in northern Maine before opening up his first environmental consulting company in 1996. Today, Jim owns and operates Environmental Permitting and Inspection, LLC.

Jim has a wonderful blended family with his wife, Sue Durst, and lives in Gorham. They are very fortunate that their four children and four grandchildren all live in Maine, including their daughter and her husband who live in Gorham.

Jim and Sue enjoy living in Gorham because of its natural beauty as an area of farms, fields, woods, lakes and rivers.

Why is he running for office?

As a small business owner and a former State Senator, Jim knows what the state can do to help people create jobs and grow their business. He believes the most effective way to create positive change is to participate in the lawmaking process. Right now, our communities are dealing with many issues: responding safely to the pandemic, rising property taxes and energy costs, and fighting climate change, to name a few. Jim is deeply committed to finding solutions to these challenges and being a voice for the families and small businesses of Gorham and Scarborough.

Having represented us in the Maine State Senate previously, Jim has a good mix of life, small business, and legislative experience that help inform his policy platforms and provide an understanding of what citizens in Gorham and Scarborough want from their elected representatives.
